Đồng Văn Old Quarter

Among silver-grey, razor-sharp karst rocks, a row of rammed-earth houses with yin-yang tiled roofs and red lanterns hanging from the eaves nestles at the foot of a mountain — this is Đồng Văn Old Quarter, around Km150 of the Ha Giang Loop. Đồng Văn is the centre of the Đồng Văn Karst Plateau, a vast limestone region admitted to the Global Geoparks Network in 2010 (now a UNESCO Global Geopark). Almost every Loop itinerary spends at least one night here — and for good reason.

Getting from Yên Minh to Đồng Văn

From Yên Minh to Đồng Văn town is about 50 km along National Road 4C, around 1.5 to 2 hours, not counting photo stops.

• The route: over Chín Khoanh Pass and Thẩm Mã Slope onto the plateau and through the Sủng Là valley, the road passes villages among the rocks, small plots of corn and buckwheat tucked into rock hollows, then drops down into the valley where the town sits.
• Riding yourself: narrow tarmac with lots of bends and some steep sections. Watch for children, buffalo and cattle, and oncoming traffic on blind bends.
• Easy rider / car: an easy ride, usually reaching Đồng Văn before dark.
• Note: after sunset the temperature drops quickly and fog can roll in; plan to reach the old quarter before dusk.

From Đồng Văn you can add a detour about 25 km north to Lũng Cú Flag Tower and come back the same way — roughly 50 km round trip, so allow half a day.

Things to see in Đồng Văn

• Đồng Văn Old Quarter: two-storey rammed-earth houses with yin-yang tiled roofs, wooden verandas and red lanterns — most beautiful in the evening and early morning when mist still hangs over the streets.
• Đồng Văn old market: a stone-built market hall with a tiled roof right in the old quarter; a market by day, often with food stalls and cafés at night.
• Sunday market: from early morning, Hmong, Lô Lô, Dao, Tày and other villagers come down to market with produce and livestock, dressed in their finest clothes. Get there before 8 am.
• Đồng Văn fortress on Cấm Mountain: the ruins of an old fort on the hilltop behind the old quarter; hike up for a panoramic view of the town and valley.
• The Rocky Plateau around town: jagged karst slopes interspersed with cornfields and dry-stone walls — an "open-air geology museum" right by the road.
• Pao's House (Sủng Là): the famous rammed-earth house from the film of the same name, on the road between Yên Minh and Đồng Văn.
• Lũng Cẩm village and Phố Cáo: villages among the rocks with old houses and seasonal flower fields, great for a photo stop.

Where to eat and stay

Đồng Văn is a paradise of highland food:

• Bánh cuốn trứng Đồng Văn (steamed rice rolls with egg): thin rice sheets with an egg cracked in, dipped in hot bone broth — a breakfast you can't miss.
• Cháo ấu tẩu (aconite-root porridge): a thick, slightly bitter porridge eaten hot on cold evenings. Ấu tẩu must be very carefully prepared; only eat it where they know how to make it, and don't drink too much alcohol with it.
• Thắng cố (horse-meat stew) on market day, lạp xưởng gác bếp (smoked sausage), thịt trâu gác bếp (smoked buffalo jerky), mèn mén (steamed ground corn) and rượu ngô (corn liquor).
• Bánh tam giác mạch (buckwheat cake) in flower season.

Accommodation is varied: guesthouses and homestays in the old quarter (handy for evening strolls and the morning market), small hotels around town and homestays in nearby villages for those who prefer peace and quiet. At weekends and in buckwheat season, book ahead.

Paragliding in Đồng Văn

Besides the main flying site in Quản Bạ, the Mebayluon team also runs paragliding flights (no paramotor here) over the Đồng Văn Rocky Plateau. Flying over this limestone country requires suitable wind conditions, so flights in Đồng Văn are arranged in advance for each group, with no fixed daily time slots as in Quản Bạ.

Best time to go & tips

• October–November: buckwheat season, clear skies, the old quarter at its liveliest.
• December–January: very cold, frost in some years; yellow mustard flowers across the plateau.
• February–March: plum and peach blossoms and the festive atmosphere of Hmong New Year.
• Market day: held on Sunday morning — plan to be in Đồng Văn on Saturday night.

Tips:

• Bring a thick warm jacket, even in autumn; nights on the plateau can be surprisingly cold.
• Have cash ready; many stalls at the market don't accept bank transfers.
• Fill up in town before heading to Mã Pí Lèng.
• Ask permission before photographing people, especially children and elderly people at the market.
