A boat trip on the Nho Quế river through the Tu Sản canyon is one of the most memorable experiences on the Hà Giang Loop. From the Mã Pí Lèng pass (around Km170), you head down to the boat pier at the foot of the mountain, then glide between two sheer rock walls on jade-green water. The whole trip, including the way down and back up, usually takes about 2–3 hours. This article covers the road to the pier, timing, the best season and safety tips.
What are the Nho Quế river and the Tu Sản canyon?
The Nho Quế river flows from China into Vietnam through Đồng Văn and Mèo Vạc districts, deep below the Mã Pí Lèng pass. The stretch that runs between two towering cliffs is called the Tu Sản canyon, considered by many to be one of the deepest and most impressive canyons in Vietnam.
From the Mã Pí Lèng pass, the river looks like a thin green thread. Only when you're down on the boat do you truly feel the height of the cliffs on either side.
The road down to the pier
From the Mã Pí Lèng pass, a side road drops steeply down to the pier area. The road has many hairpin bends and steep gradients, and the last section is narrow.
Common ways to get down to the pier:
- Riding your own motorbike: only if you're used to steep mountain roads. Check your brakes before heading down.
- An easy rider or local motorbike taxi (xe ôm): safer if you're not experienced on mountain passes.
- Walking the last section: depending on where you park, you may have to walk down a steep stretch to the pier, taking a few dozen minutes.
Large cars usually struggle to get far down. If you're travelling by tour vehicle, ask your driver or accommodation about where to stop and how to transfer.
