Hà Giang's market days are when Hmong, Dao, Tày, Lô Lô and other peoples come down from their villages to buy and sell, meet up, drink corn wine and chat. On the Hà Giang Loop, the big markets such as Đồng Văn, Mèo Vạc, Yên Minh and Quản Bạ usually take place on Sunday mornings, while many smaller markets follow the lunar calendar, rotating by zodiac day. If you know the schedule in advance, you can plan your trip to enjoy a market and a paragliding flight in Quản Bạ.
How are highland markets different from ordinary markets?

Highland markets aren't held every day but on "market days". A market day is when people from remote villages, who may walk for hours, come down to sell produce, buy tools and fabric, and see relatives. The atmosphere is liveliest from early morning until nearly noon.
There are two common types of schedule:
- Sunday markets: many district-centre markets now take place every Sunday morning.
- Zodiac-day markets: held according to the lunar calendar, 6 days apart — for example a market on the Rat day, then on the Horse day. Each week the market shifts by one day.
Schedules can change from year to year and from place to place. Always double-check with your guesthouse host or locals before you go.

Quản Bạ market
The market is in Tam Sơn town, right on the first stage of the Loop. It's a moderate size, and you'll see Dao and Hmong people selling vegetables, corn, meat and medicinal herbs. It's the easiest market to combine with a flight: visit the market early, then go paragliding once the clouds clear.
Yên Minh market
Yên Minh is the region's wholesale hub, with a wide variety of goods. The market is right in the town centre, handy if you're riding the Yên Minh stage.
Đồng Văn market

Mèo Vạc market and Khâu Vai love market
Mèo Vạc market stands out for its buffalo, cattle and goat trading area. Also in Mèo Vạc district is the Khâu Vai love market, held only once a year around the 27th day of the 3rd lunar month. It draws big crowds, so book accommodation early.
What to buy at Hà Giang markets
- Hemp cloth, scarves and hand-embroidered bags made by Hmong and Dao people.
- Mint-flower honey (in season), shan tuyết tea.
- Black cardamom, dổi seeds and other dried spices.
- Buckwheat cakes, corn cakes and five-colour sticky rice to eat on the spot.
- Thắng cố, phở and cháo ấu tẩu at the market food stalls.
Bargain gently and politely. Many items represent a month's work for the seller.
Tips for visiting a market day
- Go early: markets are busiest around 7:00–10:00 and quieten down after noon.
- Carry small cash: most sellers don't accept bank transfers.
- Ask before taking photos: especially of elderly people and children. Don't push your lens too close.
- Be careful with corn wine: if you still have mountain roads to ride, don't drink at all.
- Watch your belongings: markets are crowded, so wear your bag in front.
- Don't block the way with your bike: park outside the market area and walk in.
