Hà Giang's buckwheat flowers are usually in full bloom from around mid-October to late November, sometimes a few weeks earlier or later depending on the year. This is also when Hà Giang's autumn skies are clear and dry, ideal for riding the Loop — and in 2026 it coincides with the opening of the Quản Bạ paragliding site (15/10/2026), so you can see the valley in flower from above.
What is buckwheat?

Buckwheat is a staple crop of the highland communities, with triangular seeds. Its small flowers grow in clusters and change colour over time: pinkish-white when they first open, turning deep pink and then purple as they age. Locals plant it on hillside fields, tucked between rocky outcrops, after the maize harvest.
Today many families also plant flower gardens by the roadside for visitors to take photos, usually for a small fee.

Where to see buckwheat flowers on the Hà Giang Loop?
Quản Bạ (Km45)
The Tam Sơn valley around the foot of the Cô Tiên twin mountains is the first place on the Loop with flowers. Many gardens sit right beside National Road 4C. This is also where the flying site is, so you can take photos on the ground and see the valley from the air.
Yên Minh – Sủng Là (Km100–140)
The stretch through the valleys between Yên Minh and Đồng Văn has many flower fields scattered among maize fields and rocky outcrops. The area around Lũng Cẩm cultural village (Sủng Là) is famous for its rammed-earth houses beside flower gardens.
Đồng Văn and the road to Lũng Cú

Fewer crowds, with flowers growing naturally on the hillsides. Great for those who love wild, unspoilt scenery.
See the flower season from above: paragliding in Quản Bạ
From the ground you see individual clumps of flowers. From above, you see the whole valley: flower fields alongside rice paddies, roads winding around the foot of the mountains, a small river and the Cô Tiên twin mountains in the distance.

Autumn usually brings little rain and many flyable days. That said, late October is peak season, so book a few days ahead. Booking needs no deposit, and cancelling or rescheduling is free.
Tips for photographing buckwheat flowers
- Shoot in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft and the flowers aren't blown out.
- Wear bold, solid colours (red, yellow, white) to stand out against the pink and purple.
- Don't trample locals' fields. Only enter gardens that welcome visitors.
- Add a flycam or 360 camera to your flight (+400.000đ/guest per service, both 700.000đ) for valley shots that a hand-held GoPro can hardly capture.
Preparing for a flower-season trip
- Mornings and evenings are cold, midday is sunny. Dress in layers and bring a windbreaker.
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat.
- Book accommodation early, as flower-season weekends get very busy.
- Check the flying weather forecast before your flight day to pick a good time slot.
Suggested 3-day flower itinerary
- Day 1: Hà Giang city → Quản Bạ. Morning flower viewing around the twin mountains, paragliding or paramotor; afternoon on to Yên Minh.
- Day 2: Yên Minh → Sủng Là → Đồng Văn. Stop at roadside flower fields, evening stroll in the old quarter.
- Day 3: Đồng Văn → Mã Pí Lèng → return. If you still have energy, detour to Lũng Cú early in the morning.
Flower season is also busy season. Set off early each day to avoid traffic jams at popular photo spots and catch the best light.
