Sleeper bus

The option most travellers choose. Overnight buses usually leave Hanoi in the evening and reach Hà Giang city at dawn.

Choose a lower berth if you get motion sickness.
Bring a jacket and socks: the air conditioning on board is quite cold.
Check the pick-up and drop-off points: some operators drop you at the bus station, others at your hotel in the city.

Limousine van

Seated or cabin-style vans with fewer passengers, usually with door-to-door pick-up and drop-off. A good fit for families with young children, older travellers or anyone who wants to be better rested before starting the Loop.

Self-drive by car

If you drive your own car, head from Hanoi towards Tuyên Quang, then follow National Road 2 up to Hà Giang. Some stretches now have expressways that shorten the journey. Keep in mind:

Once in Hà Giang, the Loop roads are narrow with many steep passes. The driver needs to be comfortable on mountain passes and the brakes should be checked carefully.
Avoid driving the passes at night.
Spending a night in Hà Giang city before starting the Loop is safer.

Once in Hà Giang city, how do you get to Quản Bạ?

Quản Bạ is about 45 km from the city along National Road 4C, around 1 hour 15 minutes. There are three ways:

Take the Hà Giang – Đồng Văn / Mèo Vạc bus and get off at Tam Sơn.
