Is paragliding safe? What our flight team does
Paragliding is never zero-risk, but the risk is managed through the pilot, the equipment, weather-based decisions and clear procedures. Here is what you should know before you fly.

Is paragliding safe? The honest answer: paragliding is an outdoor sport, the risk is never zero, and no honest operator can promise you "absolute safety". But when you fly tandem with a pilot, the risk is managed in four layers: the person flying, the equipment, weather-based decisions and the procedures on the flying site. You need no experience, you don't steer anything yourself, and a flight only goes ahead when conditions allow. This article explains each of those layers, your own part in it, and who should think twice before flying.
Tandem flights: the pilot flies the whole way

Every flight with Hà Giang Paragliding & Paramotor, operated by the Mebayluon Paragliding team, is a tandem flight. You sit in front in your own harness seat, while the pilot sits behind you and flies from the take-off run all the way to touchdown. You don't pull any lines, read the wind or choose where to go.
The pilot has the final say on whether to fly or not, and can cut a flight short at any moment if conditions change. This is the most important rule of all: a safety decision never depends on how far a guest has travelled or where they would like to fly.
Equipment checked before take-off

A tandem flight uses a wing, a line system, harnesses for the guest and the pilot, a reserve parachute, connectors and helmets. A paramotor adds an engine and a propeller cage. The team's procedure includes:
- Checking the wing, lines, harnesses and reserve before every flying day.
- Checking the buckles, connectors, the guest's straps and helmet before every take-off.
- Taking any piece of equipment showing signs of damage out of service.
Before take-off, the pilot buckles your straps personally and does one last check. All you need to do is sit still for the check and speak up if anything feels uncomfortable.
Flying decisions based on wind and weather
Wind is the single most important factor in paragliding. The team follows the forecasts and watches conditions directly on site: wind direction, wind strength, gusts, rain, low cloud over the site. That is why:
- Flights run within the 06:30–18:30 window, but the exact flight time is confirmed on the morning of your flight once the wind has been checked.
- The best windows are usually 07:00–11:00 and 15:00–17:00, when the air is more stable.
- When conditions aren't right, the flight is postponed, moved to another time or cancelled. Cancellation due to weather is completely free, and the team will reschedule you.
A paraglider has no engine, so it depends far more on the wind along the slopes than a paramotor does; on some days paragliding has to wait while the paramotor can still fly. You can check the flying weather forecast and today's flight status yourself before you set off. One tip: if you're riding the Hà Giang Loop, keep your schedule a little flexible and don't book your flight right before you have to leave Quản Bạ.
Pre-flight briefing
Before every flight, your pilot spends a few minutes briefing you personally:
- How to run for take-off: for paragliding, you and your pilot run a few steps together down the slope from the mountain top at about 950 m until your feet leave the ground. For paramotor, just a few steps on the flat field in the valley.
- How to sit once you're airborne, settling deep into the seat.
- Signals between you and the pilot: telling them if you feel tired, dizzy or cold, or would like a gentler flight.
- Landing position at the valley landing field at about 450 m: legs ready, jogging lightly as you touch down.
This is also the moment to ask anything you are still unsure about. No question is a silly question.
Take-off, step by step
When everything is ready, the pilot inflates the wing, looks up to check it is fully open, turns and speeds up with you — a few steps later you both lift gently off the ground.
Insurance for every flight
Every flight includes insurance, along with your tandem pilot, GoPro photos and videos, and transfers within the Quản Bạ area. Because the insurance is tied to each individual guest, please enter your full name and personal details correctly when you book.
Your part
Safety is the job of both people under the wing. Your part is quite simple:
- Be honest about your health and weight. Guests over 90 kg, please let us know in advance so the team can prepare suitable equipment and a suitable pilot.
- No alcohol before flying.
- Eat lightly and sleep well before your flying day.
- Wear long sleeves, long trousers and trainers with laces tied firmly; avoid sandals, skirts and loose clothing.
- Arrive at the meeting point 30 minutes early so there's time for the briefing without rushing.
- Keep running when the pilot calls "run" — don't stop or sit down halfway. This is the most important thing during a foot launch.
- Say so straight away if you feel unwell in the air: the pilot can fly more gently or land early.
A detailed list of what to bring and wear is on the before your flight page.
Who should think twice before flying?
A tandem flight requires no experience or special fitness. Children from 3 years old can fly, and anyone in normal health can take part. However, please tell the team in advance and talk it through carefully if you:
- Have a heart condition.
- Are pregnant.
- Have recently had surgery.
- Have a history of epilepsy.
- Weigh more than 90 kg.
The team will advise whether the flight is suitable for you and, if so, which type suits you better — for example the paramotor, which takes off from a flat field with no downhill run.
Frequently asked questions
I've never flown before. Do I need to learn first?
No. Tandem flights require no experience; the pilot flies the whole way, and you only need to listen to the briefing and run a few steps at take-off.
What if the wind is bad that day?
The flight will be postponed or rescheduled. Cancellation due to weather is free, and the team will reschedule you.
Is the flight insured?
Yes. Insurance is included in every package.
From what age can children fly?
Children from 3 years old can fly tandem with a pilot. Let the team know when you book so they can make suitable arrangements.
Read the full procedures on the Flight safety page, then book your flight when you're ready — no deposit needed, hotline/Zalo/WhatsApp +84 964 073 555.
